We stayed in Hostel Alessandro Downtown. Really close to the station and everything else, you could easily walk to the colloseum and most of the other sights (the vatican, the pantheon, the spanish steps etc).
I think it was about 24euro a night but that included breakfast (and dinner at the time... but i don't think it will at the moment) and it was open all day. During peak seasaon Rome is really expensive so it seemed ot be a good price.
Advice, ignore the people hawking hotels rooms at the station, they make up all sorts of crap to get you to stay. |

Find a place in the rione Monti, between the Termini station and the coliseum.
It is not too expensive, a wonderful place to walk and a stone's throw from the center. |

Try the Duca d'Alba. It is right next to the Cavour metro which is far enough away from Termini to feel safer and real close to ancient Rome.
It is also rated high on tripadvisor.com and I enjoyed staying there. |

Try the hotel Dina, its 2 minutes walk from the Termini(The main rail station in Rome). Its only a 15 minute walk from the Colosseum and all the busses leave from in front of the Termini.
I stay there 3 -4 times a year, my son stays there 10-12 times a year. Nothing fancy, but you can buy your own ready cooked food from next door and eat in your room. Go to www.hoteldina.it They have an English translation. I'm going there 12th August. |

The best places I stayed were random rooms in homes that people rented out. Often from the train stations I would call local youth hostels, but almost always someone would come up to me and tell me about a room. It always seemed slightly sketchy, but was the best experience. They were always just families with an extra room and they gave the best local travel advice. |

I had stayed at Genova and it was really nice. I liked the wooden floor in hotel room (I hate carpet dust) and the breakfast was great.
The hotel is near Termini and can practically walk to anywhere.
But if you have high budget, Exedra would be the best choice. |

I totally loved Hotel Villa Pamphili in Rome. They offer a shuttle bus to the Vatican, and surrounding areas. The restaurant in the hotel is fabulous and it's not really expensive.
I would highly recommend this hotel. I have stayed there on two different occasions, and they were just as good the second time around.
Hope this helps. |
