I don't think you'll find a single consensus answer to this - there is a lot of fantastic scenery pretty much anywhere you go in Italy. I live close to Garda Lake and spend a lot of time there, but Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast, Sardegna, the Alps & Dolomites, and other places all have much to offer. It depends partly on your interests and exactly when you will be here too.

Yes Lake Garda is beautiful but Elba island off the west coast (ferry from Piombini) is simply stunning. Beautiful beaches, scenery, villages and not too touristy. Definitely worth the trip.

I'm Italian

Rome, Florence, Siena are the best!

They are very beautiful.

Venice.
Why? Because it is the most magical place in the world, it is so amazingly indescribable to see this beautiful city looming in front of you as you get there by boat. Wonderful architecture, it's so special, you must go there.

florence is amazing.
i'am italian,i love that city..
why?i can't explane it..you shoud go to Florence!;)

Capri.

Capri is the most beautiful place I have been in my entire life, and I have traveled through much of the world.

For something different, try Venice in late fall -- cool, foggy and ethereal, that's the way Venice should be seen. Do not go to Venice during the summer -- trust me!

What the most picturesque place to stay in would probably be very subjective. However, I have heard and read accounts that suggest the northern mountain and lake country of the Lombardy and Piedmont regions of Italy is possibly the most scenic territory in Italy. Of course, it depends on what you consider to be scenic.

The most famous lakes in these regions are Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Lake Garda. Stresa is the main summer resort on Lake Maggiore. Nearby are the islands of Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori. Near Lake Como, you will find Bellagio, Villa d'Este and Menaggio. Brescia, a city near Lake Garda, has some interesting monuments from the Roman and Renaissance times.
