Da Baffetto on Via Governo Vecchio lands in all the guidebooks as the best pizza in Rome. It's nothing special. They are really sparse on their toppings and there is usually a line for a table - don't bother with this place. It is very cheap, which is a plus.

Dar Poeta on Vicolo del Bologna in Trastevere is pretty good. But the place is always packed. You will probably have to get up if the table next to wants to leave - the tables are that crowded and it's always VERY loud. It is difficult to carry on a conversation with people you are eating with.

My favorite place is Alle Carrette on Vicolo delle Carrette, a tiny alleyway off Via Cavour near the Roman Forum. They offer over 30 types of woodfired pizza - delicious! Lots of outdoor seating. The place opens at 7:30 but if you arrive after 8:30 you may have to wait for a table.

I love pizza. Even the "bad pizza" is Italy is usually pretty good. Buon appetito.

Just try a whole bunch of little stores, they have the best things like sandwiches, little pizzas, lemonade, and carbonara.

I know you said in Rome, but if you plan to travel to Florence, about 2/3 of the way there (via train) is a tiny town Castiglion Fiorentino. The restaurant Regiro's at the top of the hill in town just next to the arches has the best pizza in the whole world. Have gelato there too. I would travel all the way there just to eat it. Yum!!!!
