Where is the best area of Taormina, Sicily, to stay in and why? |
There are three areas: Capo Taormina, Porta Messina, Porta Catania. How do they differ and where is the `coolest` area? |

The important difference to know is between Taormina Mare (seaside) and Taormina CittĂ (city centre), because the city centre is situated on a hill and it is linked to the seaside by a cableway.
Taormina city centre is small and crossed by the main street (il Corso, where there are the nicest shops, restaurants and so on; near it also the ancient Greek Theatre). At the beginning of this street there is Porta Messina, at the end there is Porta Catania and you can go from each other walking for few minutes. Both are good, anyway I think that if you choose a hotel in the city centre, and if you will not rent a car, the Porta Messina side is better because the cableway is there and you will be able to reach easily the beaches.
If you choose a hotel near the seaside, check it is near to the cableway.
As regards Capo Taormina, I think it is the name of a part of the coast, in fact there is a big 4 stars hotels called 'Capo Taormina' just on the seaside. |

All three of those areas are good.
The thing with Taormina is that it is such a small place that wherever you stay, as long as it is in Taormina then it is going to be fine.
All three of those areas you name are right on the edge or in the main street which runs though the main village so it really is all the same. I stayed in Porta Catania and it was great. |

Taormina is so small that it makes no difference in which place you stay.
There is one main street in Taormina, Corso Umberto, and at one end there is Porta Catania and the other end Porta Messina. Honestly it makes no difference. There is no cool area too, as the town is small and walkable to it is not like there is a dodgy and a posh part - it is all the same!
Where you stay should depend on the price you can afford as it is an expensive place :=) |
