In Milan it's expensive. My personal preference is a little out of town. When I'm in Milan I stay at the hotel St. Estorgio in Vimicate. It's close to the motor racing track at Monza and Formula 1 themed.
Great service, good food and not too expensive. Just avoid the week of the Italian GP when prices go through the roof.
For tourism experience start from the cathedral square in the city centre. Most attractions and shopping are within walking range. The square itself has dozens of cafes and restaurents to eat or relax in.

I was in Milan 2 weeks ago. I stayed in Leonardo Da Vinci Hoel (2 stars), a bit far to Duomo but close to Buenos Aires street. Rooms are for two and clean enough.
Also Diablos hostel is good (nearly) but has only 9 rooms and most of them are shared for 6-8.
