an authentic italy is the south. either sicily, campania, calabria, puglia, basilicata or the many islands.
southern italy has maintained it's many traditions and oddities. feste (religious saint days) and sagre (typical food fayes) are very much a way of life for the southern italians in the summer months. also the weather in the south is usually better than in the north.
I live in campania and in the summer months there is always something to do in the evening. it's more of a meditteranean lifestyle down here that has kept itself apart from europe...
beautiful sea and beaches, fantastic food and wines combined with very friendly people make the south well worth a visit. why visit another city when you can experience the real italy...
a little italian is essential if you're looking for a non tourist holiday as englishis not widely spoken even amongst the young
if travelling around use agriturismo, which are farmhouses usually offering bed and breakfast and evening meals with a menu typical of the area and usually all home grown or homemade.
trains in italy aren't to expensive although travelling across southern italy, campania to puglia, on a train is rather difficult.

For a first time, there's really no better than Rome, although it does have a 'touristy' feel.
The Neopolitan Riviera line is beautiful and away from the crowds.. |

The most authentic feel of Italy is definitely SIENA! It is a beautiful medieval town about an hour south of Florence. Florence is too touristy but Siena is just perfect. You can get lost in the hilly side streets and experience true Tuscany. The piazza is the best in the world. Grab a gelato and just sit in the piazza, admiring the beauty around you! I wish I could live there. |

You cannot miss Tuscany. The majority of the Italian monuments are there, and the countryside is "Word heritage site" of UNESCO!
If you plan to spend some days in this wonderful region, to visit Florence, Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano, Lucca ..... and to enjoy the unforgettable countryside while tasting the typical wines, I suggest you the lovely apartments "Il Romeo", website:

They are nice accommodations in the true heart of Tuscany: located on the Chianti hills and in key position to visit the majority of Tuscany cities.
