I would recommend Victoria Hotel in Rome, there's no need to stay kms away from the city. I went to Rome for New Year's a couple of years ago and stayed there. It's a nice place to stay, real safe, close to the Borghese Gardens; you can walk to the Spanish steps, Trevi fountain and other cool and historic places. It´s also close to the subway so if you want to go to the Vatican or other places like "old Rome" it's really piece of cake. You can always get discounts when booking on the internet.
Try this website, i believe that's the one we used to book the hotel:

I just returned from the Starhotels Michelangelo next to the Vatican and would recommend it. It was part of a package but my understanding is they often run specials for under 100 euro per night. Includes a very full daily buffet breakfast, and it has several of the amenities you might expect in American hotels. The location was quiet with several convenient restaurants and stores nearby. If the Vatican is something you want to see this is perfect, but even ancient Rome is less than a one hour, pleasant walk away.

Im a regular traveller to Rome - the area round the central railway station in Rome (Termini) is also the drop off point for airport shuttle buses and there are literally hundreds of hotels. I always use www.ratestogo.com and get hotel rooms up to 60% off the normal tariff. I used other sites and net searches and paid lots of money until a fellow traveller told me about ratestogo on the plane home and I have used it ever since and saved lots of money

Rome is a very expensive place, if you want accommodation cheap you will have to stay a few K's outside of Rome.

try the palazzio carpegna its just outside the centre on via aurelio but it is fantastic (a converted palace) and I have had some great deals there in the past 70 euros/night

Can't beat this for location - www.bellesuiterome.com -
and value. Every person I suggested this to has come back raving about the location, cleanliness value. I hope you enjoy it as well. Look it up in yahoo maps as well as teh facilities (atms, exchanges, stores, transportation) around it.

Good luck ! Have fun !

There are lots of small reasonable priced hotels around Termini Railway Station. Hotel Stella is a 2 stars hotel but it's clean, comfortable and cheap. It is located in the centre of Rome, a five minute walk from the train station. The service is also quite nice.

There is a great website I use to find and book accomodations every time I go to Italy - http://en.venere.com/italy/. The last time I was in Rome we stayed at Hotel Trinità dei Monti, which is a few hundred meters from the top of the Spanish Steps. It was a great location at a great price - 160 Euro/night for a quad room (in 2005).
