Twizi.com has a couple dozens of places to stay in Rome for less than 25 dollars a night. Their Rome page can be found using the link below. |

Some hostels are okay if you want to have a shared bathroom, and shared sleeping quarters. But when you get down to it, the price listed is usually per bed per person. I have found great success renting apartments in Rome by using www.rentalinrome.com. You can get a good apartment there for about $125 a night. Stay away from the hotels, they are very overpriced. You can also find Bed and Breakfasts, farm houses, etc...As far as a safe place to stay, the area in and around Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps), Coliseum, and the Vatican are very safe, but may be a little more. Another safe place to stay, which is a mile or 2 out of Central Rome is the Trastevere area. I hope this helps |

As is usually the case, the cheapest are not in the safest areas. Stay away from the train station area if you want to walk around at night. Actually, you could get accosted anytime of day. Look for somewhere closer to the Vatican. |

We stayed in Hotel Gabriella just behind Termini rail station- which is quite central and easy to get to, with lots of nice restaurants nearby that are not too expensive. It was quite cheap (80 eur for a room) and very nice. It is on the second floor of a building that does not look that nice but it is lovely inside! |
