Rent a car and tour the various hill top villages of Tuscany and Umbria. Places like Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra, Montepulciano, etc... It's a totally different and more relaxing vacation than any of the large Italian cities...
If you haven't been to Florence, you could spend a few days there while you are touring the small towns of Tuscany.
Cinque Terre is a nice place also!
While you are in the Naples area, don't forget about the Amalfi Coast! |

I really liked Catania and Palermo - maybe you can keep this in mind for another trip. Visiting the Aetna was great! |

Florence was my absolute favorite! I loved it more than Rome and Venice. A walking city with so much to see and amazing food and markets. The David in the Academia, Ufizzi Gallery, Duomo, and Ponte Vecchio are must sees! |

Assissi and Pisa are both brilliant! Also Port of venere. The port has excellent water to fish or swim in, and tons of stores and a few ruins too. Assissi is beatiful and has aton of stores too. A great place for a day to relax. Pisa is okay, but not my fave. |

Ciao. Sorry for my horrible english.
If u want i can suggest u a little itinerary all around Naples and his region (Campania).
The main touristic beauties are Pozzuoli, Pompei, Vesuvio Vulcan, Sorrento and Ercolano, Amalfi, Positano e Ravello and in general all the Amalfitan Coast,Vietri and Paestum, Caserta and surrounding (the famous Caserta Villa).
For some photos and other short informations this is the link (in english)

I can't give you specifics on what places to go to around those areas, but may I suggest that you travel outside the tourist "hotspots". Those are always the absolute best things to see. I've lived in Italy for several years. By Florence, you have Bologna and Cinque Terre. My family is from Bologna... it's worth the hour trip to get there to spend the day. Great shopping and Piazza Maggiore has a beautiful church in it. Best of all, it has Italy's most flavorful food. If you're not a vegetarian, try the Bolognese "Pesto" with a "Piadina" or "Crescente". It's nothing like the green basil stuff you're used to... it's something totally different and worth every calorie!
Have fun on your trip!
P.s. Eat lots of Pizza in Naples... |

I would suggest you explore a little less the cities of Italy but the smaller towns, or hire a yacht and sail from town to town along the coas. This you could do along the Sardinian coast, the Amalfi coast or the Ligurian coast. |

You come here in Naples and somebody told you Pompei and Herculaneum ??? Oh GOD! Yes Pompei is a dream to visit for the ancient Roman town but Capri, Ischia, Procida all at 40 minutes boat from Naples Port. And you come Naples and do not visit costiera Amalfi ? Naaaa... terrible!
And Ravello the little town up Amalfi the jewel visited by wordl artist, chief of states (one for all J.F.Kennedi), scientists.
Naaaaaa.... visit some links i copy down and update your travel :-)))

We spent the bulk of our 5 week stay in Torino. It was nice because we were able to catch the Tour de France in Briancon, and went hiking in some local ski areas (Sestrie, Verbinia). The were many quaint towns-none of which I'll spell correctly: Cheiri, Moncalari, Pechetto. It was wonderful to get a feel of daily Italian life in non-touristy cities. We also did the touristy places: Milan, Rome, Pisa. In the middle of the trip we spent a week in Tuscany. Tuscany was a God-send. A different pace, cleaner, more relaxing. If I could go back for another 5 weeks, it would be there. Here is a link to the beautiful farm we stayed at: http://www.intuscany.net/apartments/agriturismo_amadriade.htm |

If you are down south then go a bit further and head over to Sicily. Take the ferry across (1 Euro - it's a deal!) from Villa San Giovanni to Messina and start your adventure on the California of the Mediterranean. |
