we went to all three when we went last month. avoid naples, from what we saw it was a dump and just nasty. i couldnt believe how filthy it was. im sure there are nice parts hidden somewhere in it.

rome was great and just awesome for the sightseeing and historic feel. tuscany was beautiful and florence was to die for. i could spend the rest of my life in florence it was so amazing. beautiful, relaxing, and the whole atmosphere is different. i think rome and florence is a great combination for two different towns.

For history of the Roman Empire, go to Rome. It is easy to get around to all of the major sites. If you are really into the Renaissance and art, go to Tuscany, especially Florence. If you are into traffic and shipping of cargo, go to Naples.

No disrespect intended to anyone who's been, but I understand Naples to be a real pit. If you want to go to southern Italy, find another place, but much of that part of Italy is, as I understand it, not that charming.

Tuscany or Rome? Why not both! But if you can't, I think Tuscany is the first place that MUST be seen in Italy.

Have fun!

If you have never been to Italy before you can't miss ROME. Ancient rome, the Vatican, Spanish Steps, Pantheon. There is lots to see and do. Another great place to go is Florence.

Depends what you want. My experience is:

Venice: Romantic

Rome: A little of everything

Florence: Museums (but not much else)

Tuscany: Nice get away from the crowds of Rome, Florence, etc.

Milan: Shopping, gateway to Italian Alps

Cinque Terre (Italian Riveria): Nice small villages on rocky coast.

Naples (and south of there)have bad rep for crime.

My recomendation is clearly Rome. It is a place where you just walk around and find one place of interest after the other.

If you are looking for some green spots you either can go to the parks, or you have a trip in the neighbourhood of Rome. Frascati is not only a wine but as well a very nice old small city. Another alternative is Villa Este. This used to be the summer residence of the popes and is really a nice place.

For swimming you best go around 70 miles south of Rome, with San Felice Circeo or Terracina

All are great - if you could do one, do Tuscany. It has the most different 'feel' to it. Rome has some great sights (the ancient ruins, Vatican) but otherwise can be any city anywhere else in the world. Naples is a bit run-down (though Capri, close by, is beautiful)

No offense, but as others have said, I found Naples to be not-too-great. Rome is amazing, one should definitely see that in one's lifetime. There are just so many things there to see (Colosseum, Vatican, Spanish Steps, Forum, etc.) But, Rome is a huge and bustling city, always busy and crazy. Tuscany is more laid back, much calmer. Florence should be a good base in Tuscany, and from there you can take day trips to the Chianti regions.

Hope you have a good trip, you really can't go wrong in Italy.
