I love Rome and I was there last March. I stayed in a Hotel called Nerva that is in the middle of the so called ancient Rome at the Forum Romanum.
It is within walking distance of Termini (3/4 mile but you can also go by bus). Rome in general is not cheap. If you go in August you can have a room at the Nerva for around 80 Euros. For this location the prize is really very good.

This place is run by a family. So if it would be too expensive for you I am sure they will give you some advice where to go.

they know of a resturant 1 12 block down the street,, its wonderful.. this hotel is about 3 blocks out the Main train station in Rome.....look them up on Hotels.com and get the number...

Termini station is a busy, busy area. It is filled with the most cars, people, and noise. It's a good place to go to catch your trains, and there's an airport shuttle from Fiumicino that takes you directly there, but I don't recommend staying in the area. I lived in Rome last year for six months, and while I'm not a native and don't know everything about the city, I grew to learn a lot quick, and Termini is pretty sketchy some times. People hang out there late at night- It's the biggest crime area in the city.

I don't know about your tastes or what you'd like to do in Rome, but Trastevere is a bit far from Termini- closer to the Vatican- but has great views and a great nightlife. It's changed a lot over the years. Really cute apartments, adorable scenery... it's definitely it's own little sector in Roma. Mostly young people stay there. And every Sunday they have an amazing flea market type thing, where you can by the best handmade things, especially beautiful jewelry!
It's not too expensive there. There are some places you can stay near Piazza Navona (near Largo Argentina) that are pricey but beautiful. Rome is filled with amazing people and experiences- the key to having a good time there is understanding its a city that's made for exploring, so the place that you're sleeping most likely won't be the place you'll be hanging out in for long!

My suggestion though, is to live in Trastevere. You have to walk a little to get to the metro, but the 8 tram will get you there from the center of town (by center I mean near the Pantheon, etc).

I found this place called Roma inn which seems to be cool... am decided to stay there... I guess I'll soon find out
