Where to stay in Rome for a month?

Hi guys

I'm going to Rome in two weeks for a month to learn a little bit of Italian and take a break from my job in London. I speak very basic Italian but have decided to just dive in at the deep end and get on with it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to stay (what parts of the city) and any places to stay (pensions/hostels) or preferably any Italian equivalents of craigslist/gumtree so I can look for a room.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Drew

Ciao Drew, benvenuto!
Listings:
the italian equivalent for Gumtree is Kijiji, www.kijiji.it . It is the same company, listings are free, but it is in italian only.
Another option is the http://rome.it.craigslist.it/roo/ where most of ads are in english to ease you, but I never checked their quality.
I also use easystanza.it, stanza=room the downside is that there is premium program to be subscribed to, as a free guest you can access/be contacted only by premium users. There are a few anyway and you might have an idea of the costs and find english speaking roommates too for a quick help.

Also the roman "bible" of listings is http://www.portaportese.it/ but I never used it and of course it is only in italian.
Zone:
Roma is divided in "circoscrizioni" which replaced the old "Quartieri" and "Rioni".
As a personal suggestion try to stay along the Metro A or B lines (we have only 2 lines!) which will grant you faster access to the center and Termini train station. If you stay in the semi-center prices will lower naturally as a personal taste PRATI quarter is a good choice.
Always as a personal suggestion, avoid the messy train station area pensions.

Hope this helps,
Good luck for your search and Benvenuto in Roma!

I know a nice Hotel in Ciampino (the name is Hotel Ciampino)end it's not very expensive, but it's not so close to the downtown.,,Rome is not a cheap city, it's better that you take a room in a student house or rent a flat, take a look here

These are cheap (with google the word is "ostello")

If you want to stay in a nice place look for Garbatella or Trastevere

Check out VRBO.com It's vacation rentals by private owners. It has a map of USA and it has Europe. It's condos or houses rented out privately by owner. They have own website with pictures and description of place. They rent daily, weekly, or monthly. Depending on owner and availability.I have used it for past 7 years now when I go on vacation and have found good prices. i booked a resort oceanfront at Myrtle beach this past summer for $950.00 I called resort to see how much room would cost me and they said $1600 for same room I got from owner. It's cheaper than travel agent too! You can call or email owner. Check it out! I use it all the time! It's safe!
HAVE FUN in ROME! I am Italian. I haven't been since 1989. But my parents were born there. Rome is nice!

Ciao!
If you don't want to spend a fortune but like to be in the center: few steps away from the trevi fountain and the Spanish steps, please have a look at my website:
www.acj.it/tritone
is a studioflat: bigger then an hotel room but much cheaper!

ciao
Alessandro
