Where to stay outside of Venice - Lido di Venice or Mestre?

If it's your first time in Venice, you need to stay in Venice proper!!! Staying in Lido or Mestre is just not the same as Venice proper. Try these inexpensive hotels or B&B's (<100 Euro) in Venice proper.

In my opinion, Mestre could be anywhere - it is nothing like Venice (or the other islands).
I guess you will want to immerse yourself in the exquisite 'feel' of Venice for as long as possible, so I recommend Murano as a good base. Lido is more orientated towards its beaches.
I have found that a hotel in Venice is not as expensive as you might think once you have accounted for travelling expenses. Also it was convenient for me to be able to pop back to my hotel at any time for a rest! Remember that you will be doing a lot of walking.
I have no doubt that you will find Venice a delightful place.

Hmm....I stayed at the far, west end of the city, Destroduro. I know either Lido or Mestre has couple of really expensive hotels, so I've always thought and always stayed on the quiet part of the main island.

Inquire at a hotel called Hotel Tiziano. It's super clean, but far away. It's cheap and the hotel dog Pongo is a hoot!

Go a little further and stay in Treviso. Beautiful little town with it's own very charming old center.

When I went to Venice we stayed on the island of Murano, we found our accomodation through Expedia and it was quite reasonable. There is also the option of staying in a Youth Hostel.

Lido is a lot nicer than Mestre. Have a look at a web site called Venere.com They have some great properties in the area and their prices for Venice itself are really competative.

I've stayed in the Hotel Reiter twice (you'll find it on google) and it's just fine. They are very reasonably priced and really nice people. It's on the Lido and to be honest it's nice to stay outside the main island and the Lido is lovely itself. Also it gives you a real reason to take a lot of boats and that's half the fun! Have a fantastic time!
