Hmmm... not much great stuff around Milan. Go to Lake Como if you can. It's gorgeous. This is where George Clooney has his villa. Bergamo is nearby, though not terribly interesting. Venice is to the east by train. THAT is something to see -- one of my favorite cities. The train takes you straight to the islands. You also might venture into Switzerland, which is the cleanest country I've ever seen. Lake Lucerne is gorgeous.

The area around Milan is not very interesting. I would either go south and visit Tuscany (Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and more). It is full of renaissance art in museums and churches, and the nature is beautiful and very suitable for walks.

Another option is to go north to the lakes. Don't go there before May, better in June so most of the snow will melt and you can have some great hikes in the alps. The art in this area is mostly in villas and palaces (don't miss the Boromeic islands on lake Magiore), less museums.

Try Lake Como...check this out:

italian05!
you should go to parma. it has many shops and the batistero and duomo are beautiful! if you go a little bit out you could go to monticelli terme and there are thermal waters there. simple but beautiful!

Well about 150 miles to the east is Venice. Obviousley there are the gondols, but there are also glass blowers and other old world crafters. However things seem expensive. A vase about 10 inches tall cost me almost $100. With the weather getting nice you can head south to Genoa then west to Monte Carlo, Monaco, or Nice, Toulon and Cannes, France.

Catch a train to Verona. It takes less than an hour. In Verona you can go to the theatre, the opera, visit museums and galleries, see Roman remains, learn to speak Italian (check out a company called IDEA VERONA), visit a vineyard, walk in the mountains, learn to paint, catch a bus to Lake Garda and go swimming or rent a boat, or rent a motorino...
