I lived in Rome for a year and a half and traveled quite a bit around the country. Someone mentioned Positano and I totally agree as it's one of my favorite towns to visit. Capri is indescribable and worth the ferry ride. However, my most favorite place to stay is Hotel della Fortezza in Sorano. It's very difficult to get to but it's a fantastic find in a beautiful Tuscan town. It's an old fortress that's been converted to a hotel. Rent a car and explore Tuscany - Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pitigliano, San Giminano - how can you go wrong!

I went and stayed in the Tuscany area, which is beautiful... it has more of the villa feel. Try to stay at a privately owned hotel, they always have fabulous recommendations!!! |

Give naples a wide berth. Its something everybody should see..................once .............and then get out of there as fast as possible! Lived/worked there for last year, no plans to go back. Seriously, a couple of days at most and move on, Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi, where ever but a couple of days is more than enough. Food is the best in italy though, the only thing they can do right |

I went to Taormina in Sicilly last year, and it is absolutely picturesque. I stayed in the hotel ariston which is a half board hotel so your breakfast and dinner is included in the price. The hotel is also near the bus station which is pretty handy if you want to go on any tours. Taormina is also by the coast so do a spot of sunbathing as well. |

Looks like you're staying for awhile, then stay at budget accommodn - so you could save for experimenting on Italian food and on souvenirs.
Simply yahoo search "italy", +"Cheap accommodation" and you can get thousands of recommendations.
1 actually looks very nice for a budget-stay with b&b http://caesar.hotelnetservice.com/
I find a good guide on Italian food at http://www.deliciousitaly.com/market.htm

Go to Roma and indulge in some Veal in a small piazza right next to Termini train station. Walk by the bus station to a Piazza with a big fountain in the middle and there is a restaurant on the pavement I used to love. I would also say to jump on a train to Naples and from there do the pompie/sorrento route on the circumvesuviana line. Then you could always got to Capri or the just as nice but not as exclusive Ischia. After that travel down the amalfi coast and maybe visit a small town called Cava Detrieni(sic). Ahh you've brung back some backpacking memories from years back! Enjoy your travels! |
