It depends on what you're looking for.
I really like to stroll along Via del Corso (starting at Piazza del Popolo), Via Condotti and the area around Piazza di Spagna. That whole neighborhood is good a big variety for little shops and more commercial shops
I like Via Nazionale a lot too. It is kind of like Via del Corso.
The San Giovanni Metro stop has 2 good department stores one is Coin and the other, across the street is another, more luxurious department store, but I'm not remembering it's name right now.
For funky boutiques Trastevere is best. Campo di Fiori and Piazza Navona and their surrounding side streets are good too for little boutiques.
For Street markets, the best is Porta Portese on Sunday mornings, but there is also the one on Via Sannio, also at the San Giovanni Metro stop. The Via Sannio market is every morning but Sunday.
Then there are the Centro Commerciale (Malls). There are many of them, but most of them are on the outskirts of the city. Porta di Roma and Roma Est are good, but I would recommend doing your shopping on the streets of Rome, (keeping an eye on your wallet, of course, thieves abound in the more touristy parts of the city.) I mean, you can shop in a shopping mall anywhere, right? |

The best areas for formal shopping will be the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) and Piazza del Popolo. Via dei Condotti and Via del Corso are the 2 biggest shopping streets. This is big Italian brand shopping at its best, do expect to abuse the credit card, consider yourself warned!
Find more info and a street map here http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/spanish-steps.html
Via Cola di Rienzo road, which runs from Piazza del Popolo across the Tiber (Tevere) river to Piazza Risorgimento, is also an option but perhaps only if you are staying around the Vatican area.
For arts, crafts, artisan shops, jewelers etc you can't do wrong in the the older central areas of the city: Campo de Fiori, Navona and also Trastevere (across the Tevere).
For informal markets,
the Piazza di Campo de Fiori has a very colorful market with respects to both products and people. Here you will catch a glimpse of a Italian culture of the generations past. Definitely recommended.
Porta Portese is more rough and ready, you definitely don't go there for the sights, but the sounds and action are worth it.
Via Sannio is the road outside and running parallel to the city walls, it has a busy flea market selling clothes, shoes, hand bags etc. The stalls are mostly covered so they operate throughout the year. The prices are reasonable (certainly better than the center of Rome) and the quality is good.
Close to Via Sannio is Via Appia Nuova, it's another commercial hive and also worth a visit as you will find prices more accommodating than in the center of Rome.
See this page http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/san-giovanni.html for advice about getting to and from Via Sannio and Appia Nuova (There are Metro stops nearby).
The Castel Romano outlet, towards Pomezia (west of Rome towards the coast) is a good option if you are looking for big brands (the ones you loved in Via del Corso but had a coronary on the spot) at discount prices.
If you send them a mail they will let you know what specials they have coming up.
Here is the English language link http://www.mcarthurglen.it/corporate/home/home.php?lang=en
They also have a bus going from Termini station to Castel Romano. |
