Monuments:
PALAZZO VECCHIO (old palace) is the most important civil building in the city of Florence. The construction, to plans by Arnolfo di Cambio, was begun in 1299.
Palazzo Pitti was built in the middle of '400 by Luca Fancelli, on demand of Luca Pitti, who wanted to show his power in front of the Family of Medici, building a magnificent Palace.
The CATHEDRAL ("Duomo") is dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore and is typical of Italian Gothic architecture. The present building was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio (1245-1302), one of the greatest architect-sculptors of his age.
THE "CUPOLA"
The SAN MINIATO AL MONTE church is one of the finest examples of Tuscan Romanesque architecture
The MEDICI CHAPELS form part of the monumental complex of San Lorenzo.

Museums:
The UFFIZI GALLERY is one of the gratiest museums in Italy and the world.
The ACCADEMY GALLERY ("Galleria dell'Accademia") is one of the best known museums in Florence, because it houses famous sculptures by Michelangelo, including the "David", "The four prisoners" and the "Pieta of Palestina".
The NATIONAL MUSEUM "IL BARGELLO" has its setting in one of the oldest buildings in Florence and one of the most beautiful in Italy, which was begun in 1255.
It is worth visiting the setting of the MUSEUM OF SAN MARCO for its architecture alone. This consists of the former Dominican convent restored and enlarged to its present size for Cosimo the Elder de' Medici by his favourite architect Michelozzo (1396-1472).

In addition to the places mentioned by Deborah , there's also the Ponte Vecchio ( Italian for Old bridge ). It's a real romantic spot specially if u hav a female company.
However each and every part of Firenze is a historic marvel .
If u r a history freek , i suggest u to read some book / browse the net to know more abt the yester years of Florence .
This will surely make your trip more exciting.
Buon viaggio |

Florence is famous for its architecture, museums, and art galleries. Plan a day just walking around the city so you can see the city the way locals do. But places you must see are the Piti Palace with its Boboli gardens, the Uffizi gallery, and the Academia Gallery which is one of the most famous in the world. That's where the david statue is! The Duomo cathedral is really beautiful. And I didn't do it, but i really wanted to... take a tour through the wine country. |
