HI!!! I'm an italian girl...I'm from Rome....I think that if you come to Italy you MUST see the capital...don't you agree?
Apart from Rome I think that Florence, Venice and Milan are the most important italian cities...If you also like to see the seaside, I think that Sicily is the best choice....Wonderful sea, very good food, nice people....Enjoy your italian holidays!!! |

Head south, it'll be nice and warm. I'd advise around Naples, taking in Pompeii (which gets unbearably hot in the summer, so April would be ideal), Sorrento and the Amalfi coast.
I know that Naples is having problems, but I've been to Italy three times, and in a country where the people are very friendly and gentle, the Neopolitans stood out because they were the most charming of all the Italians I met - they kept talking to me which was hilarious because I really couldn't understand most of what they said! Naples is a lovely city, particularly in the Merguellina section of the city. We stayed near the railway station, which was a bit scuzzy and dirty, but we had a food market (on the street, fresh produce) very close by and a breakfast cafe on the street. We stayed in a place called Villa Nolana and it was just lovely, a real surprise and delight coming in from the scuzzy, dirty street, it had beautiful painted ceilings and walls, nice bathroom, kitchenette, balcony with an amazing view of Vesuvius, and it was very clean and very good value for money, and very friendly staff. Lots of cheap places to eat near us, which looked a bit worse for wear but produced delicious meals, and then the closer you got to the harbour, the nicer the look of the eateries. We tended to eat at the smaller, family-run places, and the fish dishes were sheer heaven, fresh out of the sea, simply divine.
I'd move to Naples, I was very sad to be leaving it. It's a wonderful place. Don't believe the Italians from the north who say Naples is awful, it isn't true. Like every city, it has its problems with petty theft, but we found the locals to be extraordinarily helpful and friendly. |

if i can give a sincere answer, i must say that if you want to visit italy, you have to stay enough time because the landscapes, the monuments , the architectural styles change from place to place.
There are so many faces of Italy! for example if you visit Naples and then Florence you'll see they're both wonderful, but they're so different, too. So..i can suggest you only one thing...what's the style you like most? perhaps your choice may be easier. in any case,it will be an excellent choice....ciao! |

April is a good time as it is not too hot then but try to avoid Easter as the main touristy places could be very crowded.
As to where to go, it depends what you want. Venice, Florence or Rome are all wonderful cities with lots of beautiful buildings, churches and art galleries and of course lots of restaurants to choose from. If you want countryside go to Tuscany (which also has lots of beautiful towns) or the lakes in the north (although they can be a bit touristy).
Sicily is fabulous too, lots of countryside and history.
I'm told that Sardinia is nice but I haven't been there myself. |

Why not visit some of the lesser known regions of Italy. Some of these are really very special. The ones I can recommend are Le Marche, Piedmont and Umbria. Sardinia is also wonderful and most of the island is little known. You can check out more and some photos of these regions at http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/italian-images.html |

Italy is beautiful from North to South.
How much time and money have you got?
I would suggest you to arrive in Venice by plane than take a train to Verona to see Romeo and Juliet balcony. Then head to Milan to visit the Duomo, the Sforzesco castle and Leonardo's last supper. then heading south by train stop in Florence and visit the Duomo, Palazzo Pitti, piazza della signoria and ponte vecchio, Pisa to see the leaning tower then Rome the capital! Still in Rome the vatican. Naples and the Vesuvio than you can decide to go down to Sicily or to the heel of Italy where you can visit a beautiful town Lecce. Not far from there a wonderful and clear sea. You need at least one mounth or more. Have fun! the weather is lovely almost everywhere especially in the south the food is delicious everywhere. I love it....I'm Italian! |
