Which city is the "New York" of Italy?

I want to go to Italy sometime in the future but I want to go to the most cosmopolitan central area [much like NYC in USA]. Maybe Milan, maybe Rome, somewhere else?? =]

Probably Milan and then Rome by that criteria. However, if you choose to go to Rome, you get the historic in addition to the cosmopolitan atmosphere with the added benefit of being able to get to the beach quickly on the public transportation system. Being centrally located, it's also a good base for exploring Italy.

tekno
i heard milan was very cosmopolitan

well... Rome is a metropolis inhabited by 5 millions of people, and is very cosmopolitan, but isn't a city like new york... you know... the ancient, romantic and Fabulous atmosphere make the city more like Paris, or Venice...

Milan instead is a city located in the centre of one of the 10 world's most populated areas, called "megapolis" is very, and probably more cosmopolitan than Rome. it's also more "futuristic", with his sky creepers and modern architectures...
in 2015 will be there the Universal Exposition, and over 30 millions of visitors will come, and more than 8 or 9 new sky creepers will built...

other big and cosmopolitan cities are:
Turin, big city (over 1 million people) located in the north-west of Italy.
all built in 1700-800, in neoclassic style

Naples, big and multietnic city (over 1.5 million people) located in the center of the west side of the italian peninsula, near Rome.
very beautiful, gracious and romantic as well as Rome, especially along the sea side...

Palermus, in sicily, no so cosmopolitan but big (1 million people) an beautiful.

so it's up to you: which you'd prefer...?

(ps i'd prefer Rome)

Rome isn't really that cosmopolitan. I'd say that the big one would be Milan.
