I prefer the Amalfi coast for the following reasons :
1.- It's a very rocky coast with just a few small beaches of sand. I don't like the sandy beaches...!!The Riviera has a lot of them even if somewhere is rocky (but not that nice as in the amalfitan coast)
2.- The water seems to me cleaner there and the depth are more interesting (when I was younger I dived and now I'm snorkeling).
3.- There are a lot of small villages and towns (Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Maiori, Minori, Positano) that i like much more than the resorts of the Riviera.
4.- I find the residents in Amalfi area are much more friendly.
5.- The cooking of that region is fantastic.I like it much more than the one of the Riviera.
6.- The weather is generally nicer in the Amalfi coast.
7.- Aside the summertime week-ends (when it's impossible to travel by car in the narrow scenic road) the trip from Amalfi to Positano is unforgettable. The Riviera can't offer anything nor close to this.
8.-From there you can make a day trip to Capri (with the Blue Grotto - La Grotta Azzurra) or Ischia or Sorrento or Pompei or Paestum or Naples or the Vesuvio. The Riviera can't offer so many opportunities even if I'm aware of Portofino, Cinque Terre,Rapallo, Lerici,Camogli,etc.etc.- I still prefer Amalfi coast.
I'm sure there will be somebody with a contrary thought.
From my side a can add that I'm absolutely neutral since I live in Tuscany, a different region that you should visit too, but you have asked for our preferences and that's mine with all the detailed reasons.
In any case, wherever you decide to go, you'll find a lotl of awesome landscapes and I'm sure you'll enjoy yr holiday. |

If you like crazy nights and trendy places and have money to spend, it's riviera.
If you prefer to see a great landscape and breathless sea, go to amalfi
personally I choose amalfi and a slow trip along the coast nearby |
