Buses and subways in Rome use the same ticket. You can buy tickets at most all newsstands, tobacco shops (tabacchi - marked by a black and white T sign) or at major Metro stations or bus stops, but NOT on board either a bus or the Metro and if you get caught on them without a ticket, it's a big fine! Most all of the Metro stations have no human ticket sellers and the machines are mostly broken or require exact change so it's usually the best to buy them beforehand at the above suggested locations. Last year when we visited Italy, the prices were as follows: 1 euro good for 75 min. and valid for one Metro ride, including transfers, and unlimited buses. An all day Metro/bus pass cost 4 euro. One-week Metro/bus passes were 16 euro. ALWAYS validate your ticket before boarding (using the machines near the turnstiles for the Metro or the machines on the bus) and if you're unsure how to do it, watch the person(s) in front of you and imitate. It's fairly simple. Keep in mind that both methods of transport are heavy for pickpockets so keep your passports and money in a money belt under your shirt and any other valuables, like a camera or cellphone, etc. right in front of you within your constant sight distance. You can find further information at www.atac.roma.it, or you can call 800-431-784 while in Rome.

A three day pass will cost you 11 Euros. Validate it for your first ride (bus, tram or metro) and the machine will stamp the expiration time (1 minute before midnight of the 3rd day, so it is not a 72 hour pass). Sold at tobacconists and newspaper stands.
A so-called Roma Pass also gets you 3 days worth of public transport, plus the first 2 museums or monuments you visit for free, and a discount on the subsequent sites you visit. Sold at the information kiosks you find near the main attractions and at the monuments themselves.

Roma Pass

Don't order them in advance and pay extra. You can buy them at any station.

When you arrive in Rome go to the main train station and ask for a 3 day pass for public transportation. I think it will run you around 15 euro. With that you have unlimited rides on all buses and subways in the city.
