Rome. It's spectacular and there is so much to do. Many of the hotels are phenominal, expensive, but phenominal. It's a fun city that you could visit for 2 weeks and still not see all the 'tourist' attractions. : )

Rome and Venice are both really beautiful places to visit. we had gone to venice for a day or two, but our hotel was in Rome.
if you have the opportunity, go to both cities and visit as much of Italy as u can. u won't regret it.

Venice is fun to visit for one day. In Rome, it is livelier, with more things to see, and never enough time to do so. There is the Vatican museum-I'm not catholic and it was one of my favorite museums in the world, as well as many other historical sites. Rome is also close to Naples and Pompeii, Capri and the like, so you can take short day trips easily.

Rome is much better. You will see many more locals than in Venice, and the things to do/see far outnumber those in Venice. The Romans are also much sweeter and patient than Venetians, at least in my experience.

As for hotels, those in Venice will be VERY expensive. Several hundred to several thousand EURO per night if you want to stay in the city. However, in Rome, you can stay in a reasonably priced hotel for much, much less per night. Probably just a couple hundred Euro or so. Also, Via Cavour in Rome is centrally located, and the Coliseum is just around the corner. The Grand Hotel Palatino, where I stayed last month, was an exceptional hotel--I would highly recommend it. The rooms are smaller than ours in the US, and the beds in every hotel I stayed at were twin--not queen as we are used to.

Rome is my personal favourite, but do what you like. If you've always wanted to go to Venice, by all means! Go see Venice!

Have a great time in Italia!
