now that we are in the midst of summer I would recommend the Metro del Mare....it takes about an hour and costs around €4.50 and you can see the coast from the sea which is breathtaking! The website is http://www.metrodelmare.com/
or you could take the Circumvesuviana which leaves from the station, it costs about € 3 and the trains leave every 30 minutes, they do get hot and crowed. the site is http://www.vesuviana.it. By bus, you do need to change and it isn't as frequent nor as easy as the two options mentioned about. Have a nice trip here!!!

I was just there and we took the circumvesuviana (sp.) and it is about 3 euros. Sorrento is absolutely tranquil and beautiful. You should consider staying at Le Terreze Hotel and dine at the farmhouse they recommend, it's absolutely great food and ambiance. Also, if you're staying in Sorrento you can take the curcumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi and see the pompeii ruins which I would say was the highlight of my Italy trip. Anyway, long tangent answer.
