To get into Rome Center the trains are usually the best way to go.
The Leonardo Express is very quick and non-stop and takes you direct to Termini which is the hub for the Metro. From there you can take either line A or B to your final destination.
The Roma Tiburtina is slower with a couple of stops and takes you to the Piramide area of Rome. The Piramide Metro Stop is on Metro Line B, so depending on where your accommodation is in Rome this may or may not help you.
see this page about the Rome Metro http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/rome-metro.html for more advice on the Metro stations in Rome.
The taxis from Fiumicino airport have a standard fee of 40 Euros (by law) to anywhere within the city walls, this is for 4 people including baggage. As you are in 5 you will most likely pay 10 Euros more, but negotiate this price beforehand, it's quite acceptable to do so, and recommended. (The Fiat Multipla, of which there are many in Rome, and many at Fiumicino airport can easily take 5 people.)
The advantage of taking the taxi is that you will be dropped off at your final destination in one trip, baggage and all:
If you take the train or bus then you will have to use public transport twice and depending on how much luggage you have that could be tricky.
As far as price goes:
The Leonardo Express is 11 Euros, so for 5 people = 55 Euros
The Metro is 1 Euro = 5 Euros
Total 60 Euros
plus depending on where you are staying and how much luggage you have you may need to catch a taxi when you exit the Metro.
IMHO I think you would be better off catching a taxi. You can also confirm taxi fares from the information point at the arrivals hall of Fiumicino Airport.
Or otherwise reserve an airport shuttle as mentioned before.
See this page http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/rome-international-airport.html for more advice about getting to and from Fiumicino Airport aka Leonardo da Vinci Airport aka Rome International Airport... |

The Cotral bus is the cheapest option at 4.50 euro per person. http://www.cotralspa.it/ENG/biglietti_abbonamenti_AIRTERMINAL.asp
However, there are only 8 buses per day and four of them run before 6 am.
The next best option is train. The price will depend on where you're going in the city. There is the Leonardo Express that runs directly from the airport to Roma Termini station for 11 euro per person. Travel time is 31 minutes.
There's also a local train that goes to Roma Tiburtina station with 9 stops along the way for 5.50 euro. Depending on exactly where you're staying, this may be more convenient - for example, there is a stop in Trastevere. You can check specific train schedules here: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=c79686605528a110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD Use Fiumicino Aero for the airport stop.
For 5 people plus luggage, you would probably need more than one taxi, but you could get a minivan transfer directly to your hotel for 67 euro for all of you. http://www.rome-airport.net/transfer.htm |

cheapest and easier: the train to Tiburtina station : 5,50 euro
From Tiburtina you can take the Metro and rich your hotel/apartment
Forget the bus....
The taxi have fix rate of 40 euro, but one taxi is not big enough for 5 people |
