Which is your favourite city in Italy?

I've decided to live in Italy for a year and go to a university. I've never been to Italy and don't speak Italian (will be doing an english speaking course) anyway, I've heard Naples is pretty tough, and that Florence is really nice.... How would Rome compare with Florence? Where would you suggest?

Just a note I'd prefere to be in a city, I don't care much for art or museums but would like lots of live music, good food, nice people, and a good nightlife.

Thanks for any info!

If you prefer living in a city, I recommend you Rome rather then Florence, in fact the first one is a metropolis of about 2,800,000 inhabitants, while the second one has about 370,000...

Moreover, a lot of concerts take place in Rome, the Roman food tradition is very vast, the nightilife is good...

For the truth's sake and in order to defend my city, I have to say that also Florence is not bad regarding the food ( its tradition is as vast as the roman one) and the music, but a little bit less good for the nightlife...

Finally, you can find both nice people and other ones who are less nice in every part of Italy...

P.S: What I've observed is that the majorty of the Romans are proud of their city ( the same is valid for the Florentines too) ...

Another good city for you, as some one else has said could be Milan, not so important for the art but very good for shopping, nightlife, food... And it is a city of about 1,200,000 inhabitants ...

All of Italy is magical!!

But I fell in love with Florence. Walking the very same streets that MichelAngelo walked 500 years ago, really thrilled me.

The Italian people are wonderful and will help you in learning the language. The food is glorious. As you can see, like everyone elae, I fell in love with Italy.

I've lived in three Italian cities, but I definitely recommend two of them (The third is more of a tourist destination). Roma, of course, is amazing. There is everything that anyone could ever want in this city. Just walking through at night, you see live bands, movies being filmed, new clubs. Really, a beautiful place. And the second city, is Pavia, in the north. Pavia is in Lombardia, just between Milano and Torino. Pavia may be smaller, but there is a good nightlife, and the people there are very nice. The commute to Milano is very small, and Milano, of course has an even better nightlife. Not to mention the University of Milan, which is excellent. Actually, I noticed that you said you were doing an English-speaking course there, and I would advise against it. If you take an English course, you will not learn Italian well at all, and if you do, it will take a few years. I advise taking a full submersion course. I did, and I became fluent in less than six months, which is much shorter than it seems. It's a little tough at first, but so worth it. Good luck on your trip!

Rome definetly, lots of things to do and friendly people, you make friends easily, romans love tourists, great food all over town, history and art if you want and great shopping too!! Also nightlife is great, wherever you go there is something going on.

I'm from Florence, this is a small city, very quiet, and very nice for the street and the monuments, You can go up and down to the city just by walking. For the nightlife it's not the top but liveable.
I'm agree with Mr.no, Milan is the best city for the nightlife and for the university is good to and the second is Rome. Rome is a bigger city you know is the capital.
Naples is a wonderfull city as Venice, but only for holidays, not to live. Hard dialect is spoken, it will be hard for you to learn italian. Than is not a really safe city if your not neapolitan! Venice is really expensive though. I suggest you Milan or Rome.

mr. no
U MUST go to Milan. trust me I've been living there for 3 years and it's just as wonderful as I thought It would be. Not so important fot the art but it has lots of good universities, nightlife, and everything that a boy your age would need. Don't go to naples cause people are not all that good and they don't speak english and the universities are quite bad. I was born in NY and living in Milan has been just wonderful. The city is big, lots of restaurants, discos, nightclub and the public trransports work very well so that u can reach almost every part of the city in a short time. I hope I've helped u. GOOD LUCK! Oh I forgot, the weather in summer and spring is wonderful but in winter it might be VERY cold and some years in summer there could be very strong thunderstorms with lightnings and hail so make sure u have an umbrella cause these storms come when u less expect them.!

Venice!!!!! It's just lovely there Rome is amazing as well, but if your into the really old world charm of a medieval city then you need to go to Venice before it sinks into the sea. The whole city is a marvel! But looks like your more into the night life then I woudl head to Rome there is tons of stuff to do there! Hope that helps!

Venice, Rome, Florence (firenze), and Assisi!
