which one of these is also close to Venice and how far away?

Both Rome and Turin are pretty (though different), Milan less (seems more a trade city, even if full history the same as Rome and Turin)
Venice is, again, very different from almost any other city in the world, so it would be like comparing a car and a bike, or an airplane and an helicopter :)
Anyway, I think some parts of Turin or Rome can be as prettiest as Venice (which by the way is very very small compared to both Rome, Turin and Milan)
The closer to Venice is Milan (two hour and a half by train), then Turin (one and a half further hour from Milan); Rome is distant half Italy.

I can say you the Worst: Milan
And for the other for me is difficut. Rome is fantastic but Turin is my city.
(Milan is also the nearest to Venice but apart shopping there is little monuments)

A reasonable ranking may be like that:
- Rome
- Turin (i live in it, so if you need an "unauthorized" guide...)
- Milan

By train you can reach every city and village in Italy.
From Venice you could go to Milan in 21/2 hrs- 3hrs

From Milan to Turin in 1h - 1 1/2 hrs

From Turin to Rome is quite a long trip (6 - 6 1/2 hrs)
http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/TimeTable?stazin=torino+porta+nuova&stazout=roma+termini&datag=31&datam=01&dataa=2008&timsh=00&timsm=34&lang=en&nreq=5&channel=tcom

Even if you don't want to visit Milan all the trains reaching Turin fro Venice pass by it, so you could spend just a day in and take an afternoon train to Turin.

Hope you will enjoy my beloved country :)

None of them are "pretty" as in beautiful. all of the cities you have mentioned are cool and interesting kind of like Egypt, but for example seeing nasty waste on the streets isnt beautiful. Plus Rome is a 8 hour train ride from Venice and takes atleast 3 days to see every important thing. Milan is about 4 hours away. But i will tell you of a BEAUTIFUL city located only an hour away from Venice and easy to take a train. It is called Trieste. It is right by the coast and there is a awesome castle on a cliffe called the Miramar Castle. You can also go to the beach and explore the city. Very nice.

Rome is beautiful but is a little ways away from Venice (Florence is directly between Rome and Venice). All 3 cities together would make a great Italian vacation.

Rome!

I live in Milan and I like and love my city, I feel like i couldn't leave anywhere else in Italy other than here....

But, to be honest, i went to Rome and it takes your breath away!!!!...it's amazingly beautiful!
I travel a lot and i must admit that Rome is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen!!!

for what concerns Torino, well, I've been there but personally it seemed to me a nice little city like others and i didn't see anything special in it.

Still, the closest to Venice is Milan, it's like an hour or so by train..both Torino and Rome are far away from Venice.
