Why are there no toilet seats on many toilets in Rome?
We just returned from a trip to Rome and noticed in many of the restrooms they didn't have toilet seats on them. Does anyone know why? I could understand this if it was a men's restroom but it was also in the ladies.
Italy has the mentality that in a public bathroom it is more hygenic not to make contact with a toilet seat, therefore, there is no reason to put a toilet seat, people will just make a mess on it. That is why they do that.

Culture. They are modernizing though. Good thing you didn't go to France-you thought news was crappy before? The Air Force and other services call many of the other "facilities" around the world Bomb Pits; hole in the floor and, if well equipped, foot pads. Hope you have good balance-no hand rail provided.

Yeah I know what you mean... lots of loos around Europe are like that. I think it is a supposed hygiene reason. But I think its just weird and old fashioned. In fact, I came across a few loos that were the squat kind in Europe (esp Italy)! I thought it was just China that still had those!

Maybe cuz in most countries people squat and don't use toilet seats anyways so this makes it easier for people to stand on the seats. Japan has toilets that are in-ground, which is really strange to use if you're not used to it. Just be glad there are toilet tissues.

There are. I don't understand how you couldn't find them?
