Florence was founded by the Romans in the 59B.C. and called Florentia, which is probably why we call it "Florence" rather than "Firenze". In italian, "Florentia" (pronounced flo-rent-zhee-ah) sounds more like "Firenze" (pronounced fee-rent-zhee) but with an easier pronounciation without the "L"
In english, "Florentia" sounds more like "Florence," and is easier to pronounce, and sounds more like a city name than "Florentia".
The name Florence, in Italian “ Firenze “, came from the God “Flora”, the flowers’ Ancient Romans God. They used to remember “Flora” God in spring, and the new colonies were usually built up in that Season, so the city was named Florence. As far as I know, the italian name "Firenze" is just that... the italian name for "Florence."
Along the same line, another example is "Deutschland" which in english is "Germany" |

Some of us do call it Firenze, when we're speaking to other travelers whom we know would understand what we mean. Otherwise, we just say Florence, the English name for that charming city.
