I am Catholic, so bear that in mind....when we went to Saint Peter's we had endured a long line in horrid heat. Walking up to the basilica is like a journey....not long, but thoughtful. This is where our faithful decisions are made. The power of our faith has its roots right here, with men we do not know. As we went inside the basicila, mass was being said. We sat down, we participated. We were a part of the universal, our universal celebration of our Christian faith. We shared this as a family...it was normal, yet very surreal when we reflected upon it.
We went to see the Pieta, and it was absolutely gorgeous....and yet she was behind scaffolding due to repairs and cleaning. I LOVE the Pieta, and it was stunning to see it for real. I suppose that is why St. Peter's is so memorable....the history, the art, the people all around...sharing a faith that we are a part of. It was familiar because of that connection and beautiful because of all that was offered...the Sistine Chapel, oh my God! Pictures do bring it back!
That being said, I think the saddest part is the commercialization all around. We did see the new Pope, (not an audience!) and we did buy postcards and religious articles. I guess what I would consider cheesy, others would not. Remember, I told you I am Catholic. :)
Good luck. |
