It wasnt built that way,it leans because its foundation wasnt built correctly the building was to heavy.Try putting something heavy in sand or loose dirt and it will sink thats what happened it was too heavy and one side sunk.

It's not really so GREAT, it's the tower of the Cathedral. All churches in Europe had a belltower.

It's leaning, because the soil undeer it is very sandy, and doesn't support a tall, narrow building very well.

Yeah, in a way, it was built that way...that is to say, when they started building it, it began to lean...they continued building until it was done, anyway. They did not PLAN it that way.

About ten or fifteen years ago, they closed it to tourists for a little while and shored it up so that it wasn't leaning quite as much (becoming more dangerous), but if they were to straighten it entirely, it would RUIN the town! So they only fixed the support a bit and tipped it back up a few degrees.

You could find out a whole lot more by simply searching "tower of pisa".

salmiakki
Although intended to stand vertically, the tower began leaning to the southeast soon after the onset of construction in 1173 due to a poorly laid foundation and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction. The tower presently leans to the southwest.

the tower leanse because of poorly built foundation. it was actuallly corrected recently for fear of too many people on the top tipping it over. it leans 2 inches more every year.
