Why is venice sinking?

Hello,

Venice is sinking for two reasons. The sediment that it is built upon is not stabile enough for the weight of the buildings. The motors from the boats in the canals stir up the sediment and causes a lot of damage. Also, the seas are rising. It is estimated that Venice sinks about 5 inches every 100 years. You can already see where the marble that used to keep the water out of the bricks is under water. Some of the steps that were used for loading and unloading are also under water. The city keeps building up the layers by adding more to the top and repaving the walkways. If you look at the bottom of the columns, they have no decoration because it has been paved over to help keep the city above the water line.

Several factors contribute to Venice sinking. See article below for info.

venicegirl
it sinks because of acqua alta that is becoming common between sept. anD april. this occurs when higher than average tides coincide with low atmospheric pressure anD the wind driving against the tiDal outflow from the lagoon. venice is very romantic city..i love anD i hope to go there..i love also prague the golden city.......

I don't relay know the answer. However last summer I got a chance to see Venice. It is a fairytale. And if it eventually sinks it will be a great loss.
Also, the Italian government is taking precautions by building dams.
