Absolutely don't come here in August. If you can do it, switch at least into July or Sept. As other answerers have posted here above, August is the worst month you could choose to visit Italy.
All the resorts are extremely crowded, tourist towns are in their way still 'alive' but just jammed by foreigners since almost all the Italians residents are by elsewhere in holidays. The non tourist cities are " ghost towns" with almost all the shops closed and desert streets. The average temperature (but this is also in July) is so hot that in some hours it's not healthful to be on the open air and even less keep walking in the sunny streets.
Last but not least in August prices of hotels and restaurants are ugly higher if compared with those in the other months of the year (it's the economic law of "demand and offer"...!!).
If you've already planned to come here in August I'm sure you'll survive to it, but Italy could be better enjoyed in other months
(my suggestions would be late Sept/early Oct. or late May/early June).Anyway, since you didn't specify it, if yr trip consists in staying at the seaside then tips would be different (but still valid the one concerning prices) and you might come here with less problems to afford.

I'm from there. I cant tell you this. Towns and cities are completely deserted..they look like ghost towns, most shops, cafe's, boutiques, close. It's the italian version of spring break, only that with this one, its all ages and its the whole month!!! another thing to remember its HOT HOT HOT.....the further south you go, even hotter it gets.....have fun.

Its very hot in Italy in August, and also very crowded. August is the big summer vacationing month for many Europeans and also Americans. I went in middle March through beginning of April and it wasn't that crowded. Only thing is, during March you get the Spring breakers from Spain and other places, but they'll always be people around. I've just heard that its super crowded in the summer over there.

August is probably the worst time to travel in Italy...Not only are all of the tourists there and it is vacation month for all Italians...I would say the busiest time of the year...The weather is very hot that time of year also...I would suggest May or Sept...Sardinia is beautiful in September and the tourists have died down by that time of the year....Have fun

I can confirm all said till now, I'd just like to add that even if shops are usually closed in August (excluding holyday resorts, of course) mall and large supermarket are usually open, instead, even in small towns; and be warned during last couple of year July was generally hotter than August; the weather is changing: just now, this day is sunny and hot as it supposed to be in April, not in January :)
Southern Italy is still hotter than Northern, but now not so much hotter as it was used to be; and South seems to be more rainy then North... But we're in such a flux... :)

No- go in september/october or May August can be hot(depending where yo go) and everybody is on vacation

Depends on what you want to do, most of the castles are closed in August but everything else is open the mountains the ruins and the vineyards are worth it.

One thing you should consider before taking a trip to Italy in August is that the majority of the working people have the entire month of August off and usually go on vacation. I was in Italy 2 weeks one year, most of the time in July but a couple of days in August. When we went to Torino, a city of 2 million, less that 20 thousand people remained while the rest were somewhere else, mostly by the seaside. So, bottom line, it's ok to go in August if you go near the seaside, because it's like a national spring break, but the interior is relatively emptied of people. Good Luck!
