Check out Hostelworld.com. They offer hostels and low rating hotels. I just got back from italy three days ago and I stayed in Freedom Traveler. It wasn't too bad and it is right near the Termini train station (which is one of the main train stations in rome....not sure how much info you know about rome) I was with two of my friends and we had a private room and bathroom so we didnt need to share with others and it cost us $35 each per day. If you have any more questions you can email me at LStanghellini51@yahoo.com Good Luck with everything!

By far the best guide for Rome is by Fonisol (all kinds of interactive maps, sightseeing, hotel info, tour info etc):

http://fonisol.com/rome/romeindex.htm

They have a weekly blog on Rome events and things to do in Rome also, accessible from the guide.
