Be sure to spend some time in La Fortuna / Arenol: Arenol is a beautiful cone volcano that is very active. At night you can often see small eruptions. The cloud cover is pretty bad during the green season, but still worth doing. La Fortuna is the closest town. They have a lot of backpacker accommodations. You can also get tour packages from here. There are hot springs, guided tours of the National Park (which I recommend if you can find a good price - we got a night tour / hot spring combo for a ridiculously discounted price because the season was so slow), there is a beautiful waterfall, `canopy tours, etc
Monteverde is cloud forest and also very cool. There are canopy tours, suspension bridge hiking, and a variety of other fun things to do. It's beautiful here and again, very backpacker friendly.
Manual Antonio is on the Pacific Side and well worth seeing. There is the National Park, surf lessons, extreme tours, a vanilla spice farm and some of the most beautiful scenery you'll ever see. There are a number of backpacker accommodations stretching from Quepos all the way to the park.
My next trip I'm doing the Tortuguero Canals - no insider info yet - but it looks like a great place, especially during the turtle season. |

There is plenty of information about what to see and do in Costa Rica in the TicosLand website and in the National Institute of Tourism website. Visit them, inform yourself and have lots of fun. |

Start in the Pacific southern zone. Osa peninsula is the worlds single most bio-diverse area (National Geographic) , and the Canton of Osa is extremely backpacker friendly and less expensive. It is one of few areas in the world where mountains are located directly on the ocean allowing you traverse 5 different climate zones in just a few kilometers. Parque Nacional Marina Ballena is home to the northern and southern pods of Humpback whales.
there are canopy tours, horse tours, mangroves, miles and miles of free beaches, great nightlife and world class surfing.
lots of monkeys, sloths, tapirs, etc to see in a Costa Rican non- tourist environment.
