Yep, I think I have to agree with the 2nd poster - go to see Arenal on day 1-2 and then a beach for day 3-4.
Heres what I recommend:
Day 1 - Arrive San Jose, leave to Arenal. Spend evening relaxing in hot springs in Tabacon resort, and spend the night at one of the many value hotels in La Fortuna.
Day 2 - See the volcano in the morning, and then head off to the coast. Arrive in Jaco in the afternoon, check out the beach and eat amazing fish tacos at the place opposite POPS (has fishbones as a logo). Enjoy the crazy nightlife.
Day 3 - Spend some time at the beach and then move on to Manuel Antonio. Hang out at the beach and visit the national park to see monkeys, sloths, iguanas. Eat a 'casado' for lunch (cheap and delicious) and wash it down with a natural watermelon juice or a banana and pineapple smoothie at Balu's restaurant on the main beach. Sunset drinks at Barba Roja for an amazing view.
Day 4 - Stay in the Manuel Antonio area, either go see the 'Tres Pilas' waterfalls or if feeling adventurous go on a rafting trip with Iguana Tours. Fly back to San Jose on the last plane which costs $50, and takes 20 minutes. Eat 'ceviche' for lunch if you are a fan of fish.

This might help U.
Day 1 Arrives to Costa Rica.
A representative will greet you at the airport and provide transportation to the Hotel ______ located downtown San Jose.
Overnight at Hotel ______.
Day 2 Poás Volcano, Arenal Volcano, Tabacón Hot Springs
Early morning pick up at your hotel and begin your journey to the Poas Volcano National Park. The active crater with temperatures between 104° F and 158° F is located in the center of the park; the poisonous sulfur fumes do not allow any life near by but make Poás - because of the gas process - the world's second biggest geyser. We then pass by car Costa Rica's most impressing waterfall - Catarata La Paz - that comes down on the east slope of Poás Volcano over 3,900 ft. in different cascades. You will stop at an amazing hummingbird gallery before continuing your trip to La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano.
In the evening at the Tabacon Hotsprings, you will enjoy a bath in the sulfur water of a little river forming natural pools within a beautiful tropical setting, where - with some luck - you will be able to watch the fascinating volcano eruptions of red sparkling lava. After dinner, return to your hotel _________.
Overnight at _____________.
Meals included: Breakfast and dinner.
Day 3 Manuel Antonio National Park area.
After breakfast, drive on the Interamericana South and following the coastline continue towards the town of Jacó, stopping on the way at the bridge over Rio Tarcoles where we have the opportunity to observe large crocodiles. On the way you will visit the Carara National Park, one of the main nesting areas of the Scarlet Macaw. Short hike on the park trails. Drive further South to Manuel Antonio; arrival at your hotel in the afternoon.
Overnight at Hotel _____________.
Meals included: Breakfast.
Day 4 Manuel Antonio, Transfer back and departure
A hike of about 1.5 hours will lead you through the rainforest and to the fantastic beaches within the park. Observe capuchin monkeys, sloth, iguanas, anteaters and various species of birds while exploring the hiking trails through the rainforest; then relax on the beach or take a refreshing bath in the Pacific Ocean.
Either you could choose to take a flight back to San Jose that will take 25 min or a transfer of 4 hours approximately.
A representative will drive you to the Juan Santa Maria International Airport for your return flight.

Hi Uru,
The best answer really depends on what you like and your budget. Tabacón in Fortuna near active Arenal Volcano is overrated and very expensive in my opinion. There are other cheaper hot springs in the Fortuna area such as the Ecotermales, a reservation-only place that will never get crowded like the other options (yet it costs less!).
Also, depending on when you travel to CR once you get to Fortuna active Arenal Volcano may be completely clouded over and you will not see much more than whiteness.
If you are looking for an active and nature oriented vacation and are not interested in crowds I suggest that you try MalPais beach in southern Nicoya Peninsula. You can fly there from San José (about a 45 min. flight costing less than $90 each way) and you will find drier weather all-year round, a groovy surfing scene, amenities, many lodging options and the best sunsets.
From MalPais you can visit a nature reserve, surf, do a canopy tour, go sea-kayaking, hike, etc, etc.
Of course, if you are interested in nightlife, casinos and cheesiness then save your time and spend one night in San José and then two nights in Jacó (Central Pacific Coast).
Good luck,
Carlos
