I would definitely suggest renting a 4x4 for several reasons. (1) The roads are riddled with potholes everywhere. A 4x4 will give you better suspension and a higher ground clearance. (2) Many beach towns are only accessible by un-paved roads. (3) Although February is not during the rainy season, storms do occur. When I was in Costa Rica last year, we got stuck in Dominical for 2 extra days because the roads flooded. A 4x4 can help get you through minimal flooding. |

It's not mandatory but recommended.
I own a 4x2 small car, and it suffers a lot with the poor conditions of our roads. If you want to forget about it, rent a 4x4.
It's not necessary a very big one like a Montero or Patrol. You can get a Rav4 or similar. |

Some people say that you dont need one but the truth is that yes you are way better off with a 4x4.

Hey Kapn. You need the book on Costa Rica by Lonely Planet. Get the 4 X 4 and get a good one. This is not a place to skimp unless you are a good mechanic and can change tires in the rain and mud. |

Jake has the right answer, but I would add, make sure you get a good size 4x4, the little ones will not give you the power/security and clearance. Also, driving in CR is unlike the US, it can get scary at times since the roads are narrow and CR drivers are not some of the best drivers in the world. |

It would be advisable to get a 4x 4 if you are goijng to visit the beaches and uot of the way areas of Costa Rica, the main problem is that there are lots of potholes specially in the secondary roads which you will likely go by, this will make your drving experience more confortable.
you can get by in a regular car but if you can get a 4x 4 you can access more roads without getting a sore butt afterwards.
