Lava Tours
Hi,

I would suggest only two destinations, either:

1. Monteverde and Fortuna
2. Monteverde and Montezuma
3. Fortuna and Montezuma

My personal rec is Monteverde and Montezuma. But then again, it really depends what you like. If you enjoy hiking, birding and such then Monteverde is a must. If you love beaches then Montezuma is a most.

Finally, if you can afford to rent a car then by all means. 4x4 is not required to visit the locations that you are interested in even in the rainy season.

Good luck!

Try to choose 1 or 2 of your destinations. You will have time to relax and enjoy where you are staying instead of just pressing on to the next location.
Slow down and enjoy!

I think it is best to travel Costa Rica in a 4 wheel drive SUV. A car wont cut it off paved roads. If you are in a bus you cant stop or have an unplanned adventure if you see something that interests you off the regular route.

If you are not a good, experienced mountain driver... driving might be bad, as the roads are very scary at times. There are 3000+ foot dropoffs on the side of the road with no guard rails and trucks coming from the opposite direction taking turns wide. You really have to be ready for anything... and wary of a head-on collision from someone passing a vahicle heading in the other direction on a turn.

As for visiting those 3 places in 5 days... technically you *CAN* do it... but you are going to be in the car the whole time. Travel in CR is SLOW!

And it's rainy season. Bring some rain gear, and be prepared for washed-out bridges and roads... and a crapload of rain!

well one thing is when do you plan to take this trip?because as the other person stated yuo dont want to go in rainy season.i plan to go myself but im waiting till november wish i could go in december cause of christmas partying, but besides that i went once in october and went to this resort and spent it inside cause of the rain.it would be nice in the morning but at noon ,sure enough the rain was in its way.well i myself have been to montezuma i was in jaco and then took a little fishing boat looking thing to montezuma,it took like a hour nice view but scary cause how it would jump in the water.we just got the tickets the night before and in the morning caught a cab to were they tell you to wait for the boat.it was me my buddy and this other guy plus the guy steering the boat.,we didnt make any reservations to go to haco or montezuma just went and looked for a place to crash,we got a room for 8bucks a night, not really fancy not even a bathroom in the room but they have one outside for everyone it just has two beds and a fan,but we were doing the adventure thing.so who cares as long as we had a place to eat and have a few beers that was good, well montezuma isnt really a place of much to do but its somethind different, i enjoyed it much and the food was okay.what i liked about it after we left the bar like at 4 or 5 in the morning we just hanged out in the street and kept on drinking how often can you do that in the states and not get in trouble for it . well on another note iwas born in costa rica but have lived all my life in new jersey, but i love costa rica more then any place i love the foods atmosphere everything !!!!!!!!!! its just knowing were you going and being careful of where you go.me personally i prefer to go on bus or taxi cause i dont like driving in costa rica
