Advice for going to Peru? |
Im 17, and im applying for a passport to go to Peru to study and meet someone that ive met online. (yes, cliched, i know) I am very protective of my personal belongings and information so i don't have to worry about that. However, ive gotten this persons hopes waaay up telling him that i will go in january. now im having second thoughts because i don't have too much money right now and i an getting more nervous by the day. He has reassured me over and over that he will help, and he seems very reliable from the research ive done, but i refuse to depend on someone. what can i do? Additional Details Let me mention that Im not going to go until im 18. Why would I go an underage girl?! And yes, i know spanish. |

Well, Peru is a safe place for tourist, you can visit us anytime of the year. But I am a little worried because of your age, it seems that you are too young to visit a men whom you have only met online. And you are going to meet him in a foreign country, speaking a foreign language, and with a little money.
My advice is this : If you really want to come to Peru, come as a tourist with friends or relatives, do not depend on anyone. |

well Kate I took the same chance of meeting someone online after speaking with them numerous times on the phone and internet. Last year I met him in Argentina and he turned out to be a nice guy. As a matter of fact, we are meeting in Peru this December to climb Machu Picchu so I can't wait, but of course it may be a little dangerous for you since your a young female so I'd take caution.
Good Luck! |

by all means go visit Peru, but do not meet with him. very dangerous.
stay in tourist ares as "Shining path" may take you hostage for ransom. even though they are against certain groups within Peru
they normally leave tourist, travelers alone |

Do not depend on anyone else, ever. Being independent, especially with someone you don't *really* know and in a country you are unfamiliar with, is important. If you are dependent on him you may be setting yourself up for abuse. He could easily not provide you with money and not allow you to return home.
Do you speak Spanish? If you don't, I'd strongly recommend not going. |

First, whatever your reasons for going... If you don't have much money, postpone the trip. Don't depend on anybody.
Second, because you also plan to meet a "stranger"... Make sure somebody back home knows your true plans and you should also be able to supply your contact person, back home with full details of this "Stranger" (Name, phone, address, and a photo, if you have one). Also establish a contact time to call the person back home to let them know when you are scheduled to meet this person for the first time. Also establish a call time for after he meeting... If your home contact person doesn't hear from you by "such and such a time"... Then they can worry and try to contact you.
Also make sure you register with the American Embassy. Let them know your itinerary, and plans to meet this person. Peru is generally safe but it can be a somewhat unstable area at times. Not just politically, but literally... Just like my home state of California, Peru has earthquakes once in awhile. So, letting the embassy know of your presence is a good idea regardless of why you're there, especially since you're a minor, alone.
As for actually meeting the person you got to know online... Make sure the first meeting is in a public place, and if you have any hestiations about his personality... Listen to your guts and leave. The fact that he keeps telling you that he "will help" you sounds a bit "desperate and dodgy" to me. But, that's just my opinion. He could just mean that he will be "treating" you as a guest in his homeland and paying for admissions to places you will see together, or meals that you have with him in restaurants etc... |

Like any other country, you will find good and bad people. Meeting people on the web is not at all save. It does not matter if he is from Peru or from England; it would be good if you go with someone and not alone as well as staying in your own hotel. But overall............shouldn't he come see you??, that is what a guy should do. He should go out of town to meet the girl he likes not you. After all, if he is a good guy not only you but your parents will know him, but if you are up there alone things could go bad with him. I would go as a tourist with someone else, enjoy the beauty of the country and their food and only go to social places with him. Good luck and I hope he's cute! |

go with friends and stay in an hotel; You do not know this man and he can hurt you, it isn't any different than going to NewYork to meet a stranger.
Go as a tourist and meet him in Miraflores (a public place) like a coffee shop, (not a bar)
1)always buy your own drinks (people can put pills inside the drink)
if you don't have money, then go to the bar with him and see how he buys it and you receive it directly from the bar tender.
2) always meet a stranger in a PUBLIC place.

being 17 you will not only be a foreigner in Peru, but also legally underage, if you can't depend on yourself, you shouldn't expect to be dependent on him, even if that happens, he would be in so much trouble if somebody finds he's with an underage girl. What should you do? well, if this is as serious as you state, then you both can wait till better times. |
