Am going to Latin america with a 1 way ticket - will I have problems?

Am going to South america in a few weeks without knowing for how long, will be backpacking. Only have a ticket to Bogota', plan on staying in South America till around March or so and then heading back to Europe.

I've heard that immigration sometimes demand proof of exit as a prerequisite for entering the country, but I don't want to commit myself to any tickets. If I produce 2 credit cards &bank statements (proving that I have plenty of cash to survive) will I be ok?

And if not, will I be given the chance to get online and buy a cheap ticket from Bogota to Quito, or will immigration simply deport me on the spot!?

I know from personal experience that when you show up at the ticket counter w/ a US passport (or any non-SA p'port) that the airline will obligate you to buy a return ticket. it doesn't matter if you have money in the bank. you are req'd by law to have a return ticket. i guarantee it.

The normal International travel and Immigration rules for all countries is that you have a return or onward ticket or proof of funds to look after yourself while in the country and also pay for such an onward ticket, before the Immigration offcials will let you enter the country, regardless of wether you have a Visa . Its wise to really have the ticket to your next destination when you enter the country, it only takes a snotty Immigration officer in a "bad mood" to deny entry and you are then "up the Amazon" without any paddles ! Be careful on this one. It is Colombia.

First of all be careful.. Make sure you have enough money and are able to leave at any time. It is probably not a good idea to go alone. After watching hostel I don't think I would want to try back packing... But good luck to you.

You will need to check with the embassy. But i have heard that it is a requirement to have onward travel. It might be best to get some kind of open return ticket.

You need to ask your travel agent about entry requirements in Bogota. If not contact the Columbian consulate and ask them about their requirements for entry. If you have an Australian passport you will probably need an exit ticket.
Why don't you buy a world ticket with flexiblible dates in it so you can change them if you like the country you are in, most world tickets give you a year to use them. That way every country you are going to will allow you enter.
Also make sure you check on all the entry visa requirements for each country.
Unless you have a south american passport I believe you will have problems without an exit ticket.

Why not try buying round trip, if you change your mind later on, the charge for the change of date isnt that much.....

Please, travel safe...

It very well may depend on the country and/or immigration officer you encounter. Most countries require proof that you will be leaving.....although I sometimes wonder why as some of them you would have to be crazy to want to stay. You start flashing credit cards and money to some of those immigration officers down there and you might not have much money left afterwards.
Hard to say what immigration will do and if you can even find an internet place/computer that will work. Even though they internet almost everywhere it doesn't always work in countries like that. I would think you're best bet would be to look into an open-ended ticket. I am not sure how it works but I know it can be done. Contact your travel agent or the airlines.

You will need a passport also and some immunizations or shots and pills...Good Luck....

no problem from their part ...but you really want to go to a country without the return ticket ... I do not see the sense of it ...what if you lost papers or whatever
