Any Advice on moving to Costa Rica from the US, to live permanently.?

I have been doing a lot of research since hubby and I have decided we would like to live in Costa Rica, there is just a few things that still bother me and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

We have an SSI income here, and know that SSI continues if we leave the country, but what we are worried about is the fact that the SSI is only temporary for a couple years, and we have looked all over and can't seem to find away that we could come to Costa Rica and work.

Is there any legal way for us to find work without college degrees, what should we apply for as far as visa, and how hard is it find work there? We don't want to get down there and have the SSI cut out in a few years and have no way to work.....

Please no rude responses.

First- wait. A law has been proposed changing the income requirements for people applying for residency. It proposes to raise the minimum to U$2000/month for pensionados and U$5000/month for rentistas. This law should be passed or denied or modified within a month. (Read amcostarica.com or ticotimes.net for updates.)

You may work for yourself- start a business. There are almost no restrictions for your own business. You can not practice a licensed profession (doctor, lawyer sort of thing) but you could run a business that includes hiring them. Or almost any other type of business.

A note- pensionados and rentistas are the 2 main categories for residency. The fist most show a guaranteed income from some stable source SSI or pension funds for example. Rentistas have to proove a monthly income that is not "guaranteed." SSI qualifies for the pensionado but it is not likely you can meet the proposed requirements. So wait and keep up to date by following the online newspapers.

The below site was developed by a US citizen that is now living in CR. He has very thorough info on moving and living to Costa Rica. Anything that isn't listed in the general information, he can probably answer via the blog or email.

Good luck!

It looks like you can retire there, start a business, be a relative of a citizen be an employee of some sort of religious organization? Missionary? Priest? Nun? to live there.

It’s difficult for foreigners to find work in Costa Rica. The government doesn’t like any one taking jobs away from Costa Ricans and the labor laws reflect this sentiment. Basically the only foreigners legally employed in Costa Rica work for their own businesses, possess skills not found in the country or work for companies that have special agreements the government..It would be difficult if not impossible for you to make a living in Costa Rica......

There are many ways to obtain residency in Costa Rica, one is the income requirement which might change, pay no attention to the amounts being said as a minimum because the Law projects go through many changes before becoming a law.
You can also form a corporation and work indirectly with it.
There are also many ways to work and relocate to Costa Rica., if you like you can contact us by e mail for more information.

i'm sorry but you can't get SSI if you leave the USA .....unless you lie....but it is an awesome life here....you don't take emails?.....i do and will gladly ans any and all questions.....Steve

Currently you can apply for retiree status in Costa Rica and the law states that you need to prove a lifetime income of at least $600 per month. There is a new proposal in Costa Rica, but the law has not been passed yet that would increase retiree status to $2,000 per month. What you are not going to do is give up your rights as a US Citizen. If you go to Costa Rica based on an income of investments, you cannot work. You might want to consider an educational program about living, working and investing in Costa Rica. This link might help with your research as this is a site geared toward educating you about Costa Rica.
