I was there a few years ago. I lived in Ecuador so my friends and I took the bus to Lima and then flew to Cuzco. You can take a bus from Lima, but it takes a long time on a very curvey and steep road. Once you land at the airport there is a hawker there to meet you, set up by the agent who sold you the ticket, or there are hawkers just hanging out you will have to fight off. They provide transportation into the town and take you to a hotel. You can ask to see a few, but they take you to get their commision. Then they will give you the sell on packages to visit smaller (but really cool do not miss) sights, and an Inca trail hike. You can say no and wander around the main square and shop for your own tours/trips. I took the train Manchu Pichu as I was pinched for time. Very rustic train, no lights when it gets dark. You have to pay a fee to go in the park. North Americans/Europeans more than South Americans. Then you are divided up in to tour groups by language. I would stock up on hearty snacks in town as at the sight there is only one or two places to eat and they charge first world prices. The altitude is a killer, take it slow, carry water with you at all times, and some candy for a quick boost when you feel you are fading. If you go alone you can meet lots of people doing the same thing, so do not worry. Travel with a trusted buddy is always more fun in my opinion.

Machu Picchu is located in Cusco, nearly 7,700 feet (Cuzco 11,024 feet). You do have to fly into Cuzco to get to Machu Picchu, smart travelers head immediately to the lower elevations of Machu Picchu and return later to spend some time in Cuzco, so you'll be able to acclimate to the dramatic increase in elevation between seaside Lima and the mountains.

You can visit Machu Picchu on your own, but to fathom what its builders accomplished takes a knowledgeable guide.

Hiram Bingham was a bold explorer and archaeologist who discovered Machu Picchu and stated this was the birthplace of the Inca's empire. His long-accepted hypotheses have been proved wrong lately. Machu Picchu was not the birthplace of the early Incas (pottery unearthed here is from the 15th century), nor was it the last stronghold defended against Spanish conquerors. And it definitely was not a sanctuary for a cult of "Virgins of the Sun," as Bingham believed. The most prevalent being that Machu Picchu was a "resort" for the Inca elite or a district center from which rulers oversaw conquered lands.

Machu Picchu mortarless walls, many made with perfectly squared massive blocks between which a knife blade could barely slide, are still standing after more than 600 years of weather and earthquakes. The mystical power of the place, and the enormity of the engineering feat it took to create it, leave one speechless.

Never go alone in a new country, unless you have been there before! I suggest you to take the bus, because there will be a guide that will talk about the history of Peru!
