Any tips on a trip to Costa Rica? |
My hubs and I are traveling to Costa Rica in January. I've already found a good option for a hotel in the Manuel Antonio area, but we also want to do the Monteverde Cloud Forest and possibly Arenal. Should we take day trips from Manuel Antonio, or stay in hotels in those areas?
Thanks very much for your help!!! |

Day trips from Manuel Antonio will give you a lot of road time. Probably it is best to stay a few days in Manuel Antonia, picking the shorter trips, then shift to the Monte Verde area and make some trips from there. There are not many alternate routes in Costa Rica for long distance travel. That way you avoid going over the same stretches of highway, which by January are usually in bad shape. The rainy season is over but the repairs are barely started. Travel time for Monte Verde to Arenal is not bad but again if you can afford it shift hotels after a few days. |

Is Beautiful you should stay at the Arenal because the volcano eructs every night and monteverde well just stay in a hotel every place probably is your best for money and to enjoy at best and more fun to travel in your own. |

If you have time, do more trips. Oh and as a safe tip be careful of pick-pockets, and be sure not to go very far away at night. When driving be careful too, as we're the 3rd (I think) country in the world in quantity of car accidents. If you can, go to Monteverde at least, it's worth the trip. |

Just got back after a month.
If I had to do it over again:
Fly into Liberia, rent a big 4 X 4 (400 bucks a week), hit Arenal....go to the Observeotary.........and make reservations there........its really cool. Stay overnite......if your luckey you will see the volcano......then drive to Monteverde......stay two nights.........do the zip line at Sky.....the very best in the country. Then to Manuel Antonio stay two nights. Fly out of San Jose. Use American Express Preimum Insurance and save some bucks. CDW wavied. Get the card...Its worth it. The road trip I suggested is a nightmare of bad mountainous roads expect the worst....... |

It will be much more comfortable for you to stay in hotels in those areas. Driving in Cr always takes about twice what you think it will be. Even traveling between Monteverde & Arenal is not an easy/jump/hop/skip. It will be much more convenient to break up your trip in the three areas (all totally worth doing) and plan on spending a couple of days in each. That way you limit your travel time and can really relax and enjoy what each area has to offer. |
