My favorite place in the whole world. We've been there 3 times. Just about everybody finds it magic, all ages, beliefs. There is something special in the air.
If you go, do not feel you have to hike there, as the Inca Trail is now restricted and last I heard not very, er, clean. The trains are great. If you can spend at least two nights in Aquacalientes you won't be sorry. Be sure to stay a few days OR MORE in the Sacred Valley, including Cuzco.
It's been a while since we've been, but I'd love to go back ... see our web pages on Peru ... http://jackmaryetc.com/Travel/Americas/Peru/peru.htm |

It is definitely a wonderful place, you must be there to discover for yourself all the things that people write about it. Cusco, which was the Sacred city for the ancient Peruvian has a lot of magic & charm for the visitant, but Machu Picchu is the Greatest point, you can feel it in the air, it is like a peace & quiet covers you, nothing else really matters, you are totally relaxed, in direct contact with nature. Take your time, and arrange a visit to one of the new 7 wonders of the world. |

I've been twice to Macchu Picchu, I LOVE IT, the peace and tranquility you get up there is amazing, For me is one of the places where i will go to find a piece of mind, but due to my working status and timing, it has been impossible. You should try to go and visit it. Its an awesome place. |

yes, you must visit. Going to Peru and not visitng Cuzco (specially Machu Picchu) is like visiting Paris and not seeing the eiffel tower :P |

Machu Picchu is at very high altitude (16 000 ft. ) and many can get altutude sickness and might need oxygen. |

Machu Picchu is described as being in the city of Cuzco. That is a little misleading. Machu Picchu is about 40 miles away, and the most common way of getting there is a spectacular train ride up the Urubumba River. At some points, the train glides along deep canyon edges to a raging river below. It comes to rest in Aquas Calientes, which is spanish for Hot Water or Hot Springs. This is a lovely little tourist spot with lots of shopping. This is also where you will board a bus for what seems like an equally perilous ride up the mountain toMachu Picchu . Most people who visit Machu Picchu stay in Cuzco; however, there are a few places to stay in A. Calientes and a very expensvie hotel at Machu Picchu itself. Another option is to hike the Inca Trail, which takes 2-4 days depending where you start on the trail. That will take you over a moutain ridge by foot, and you descend into Machu Picchu instead of going up the mountain by bus to get to it... which is pretty cool. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! I am an AMeican who used to live in Cuzco. |
