Crime happens anywhere... I've been robbed twice in Costa Rica, both times were because I got a little careless. This is a third world country and opportunity doesn't exist like it does in the States. Just be careful with your belongings... and remember there are also good and bad people everywhere

Well, like in any major city San Jose has it's lousy areas, the main one tourists would see is the intercity bus area, but even that's no big concern except early or late in the day (when the streets have few people on them), and the taxis are really cheap so you can take them in and out. Bus station areas in other large towns are also sometimes slightly dodgy, ie Heredia.

I know the murder rate in Costa Rica is lower than the US (and much lower than the rest of central America); property crimes seemed higher, I would watch out for pickpockets and such.

On the whole, I did not feel unsafe in Costa Rica, in fact I felt safer than in Mexico or much of the US, but you should have the same precautions you would have traveling anywhere.

My husband and I just retired in Herradura about 6 miles from Jaco ....We love it ... just dont put your camara on top of the seat or go to the bathroom and live your belonging on the table not a good idea here or in any country ......but you are going to have lots of fun
good luck
