No, Ecuador was one part of a bigger nation called 'Greater Colombia', which was Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. That was during the early independence years.

Then the country split into the three we have today. Just like Central America was one nation and then split.

Hey, I'm Ecuadorian! Gideon said it right, although he forgot to mention General Simón Bolivar was the one who helped Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and even Peru to get rid of Spanish, that's why we're called "Bolivarian countries". Also, note that we solved our border problems with Perú in 1997. Presidents Jamil Mahuad (Ecuador) and Alberto Fujimori (Perú) signed a treaty of peace, in which Ecuador ceded part of the Amazonia to Perú. Sadly for us, we lost a lot of territory, but many people in Peru still think THEY were the ones who lost more than Ecuador. Not fair to me but I don't want to start with that because I don't want to hurt any Peruvian reader's susceptibility here. What's done is done, we still have a great country to live in.

Sorry I'm not able to help you with the map thou...

Actually the west part of Ecuador, where is Guayaquil was part of the "vice-reino" (how do I translate it? vice-kingdom?) of Peru, that also included Chile. The east part, where is Quito was part of the "vice-reino" of Nueva Granada, that also included what is today Colombia, Venezuela and Panama. After the independence the two parts of Ecuador joined what today is called "Great Colombia" (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama). The union only lasted about 10 years. Ecuador and Venezuela splitted in about 1830.

Present-day Ecuador was once part of the Inca Empire, before the arrival of the Spanish. Quito was a very important Inca city at the time. After the conquest, Ecuador and Peru were both part of the Viceroyalty of Peru, a Spanish administrative structure. They went their separate ways around the time of independence: Ecuador was liberated from Spain a few years before Peru, and became part of Greater Columbia. Ecuador and Peru have been separate nations ever since, although they still have a few unresolved border issues, particularly in the jungle.

hmmm... mabe I found it in a book but i remember reading in the LIBRARY (do u know what that is mabe you should try it) Yea well, Colombia, Venezuela y Ecuador were all one country called something like " The Republic of Colombia" and then there were wars and IDK if peru ever belonged. Check the flag. If the flag hads red, yellow and blue it probably was part of it.
