Santiago is a huge city, hotel options are hundreds and you don't mention how much money you are willing to spend. I would recommend to stay in Providencia or Las Condes, which are the safest sides of town. If you are not renting a car, stay away from the Sheraton (you will have trouble with transportation). Any hotel close to a subway station will be a plus. The subway system is really clean and safe (I would say it's better than DC metro).
In terms of clubs, you have Barrio Bellavista and Barrio Suecia (not sure if they closed down the latter, it got quite dangerous for people doing stupid things or walking around totally drunk).
Day attractions: Downtown Santiago: Palacio de La Moneda (Chilean Whitehouse), Cerro Santa Lucia (have to walk all the way up, it's worth the view!), if you are the museum kind of person, there are quite a few around the area... just remember museums are closed on Mondays. I recommend Museo de Bellas Artes which is located in the middle of this long park (Parque Forestal).
Another museum which is really cool is the Museo Interactivo Mirador (science, arts and nature... it reminds me of an updated version of Epcot in Disney World), which is located kinda far off the regular turistic places, but worth the trip.
A MUST is the museum located at Pablo Neruda's (Chilean Literature Nobel Prize winner) house. It's around the Bellavista neighborhood. If you have the time, I would go to his other 2 houses located at Isla Negra and Valparaiso. You can't go to Chile and not know who Pablo Neruda is.
Stay away from the zoo... it's a piece of crap compared to the ones you can find in the US. That's not the image of Santiago I would like you to take with you. However, I would still allow you to take the cable car (teleferico) that takes you up to where the zoo is located. The view is amazing on a clear day! |

you can visit www.chile.com and there you can find many hotels in Santiago, is such a big city I don't know where you wanna stay.
The nice sites to visit there are Cajon del Maipo, which is a couple of hours (3)to the Andes, the Zoo, museums, or if you wanna go further you can go to Vina del mar which is a wonderful city north of Santiago, is next to the ocean. hope this helps you. ;) |
