I traveled to Costa Rica by myself, it was my first time to travel by myself, and I did not feel unsafe or threatened at any time that I was there. I just met people to travel with while I was there studying Spanish. I think it is the best way to travel! You can take public buses very inexpensively to practically any place in the country. Buses can cost from $10 - less. Like I went to Jaco for a weekend with some Friends I met and I paid only $3 for the 3 hour bus ride there. Just get your tickets a little bit in advance because the tickets can be sold out pretty quickly if you wait until the last minute on weekends.
Also, for more money, you can take interbus to any destination in the country. It is a big van that takes you places with other travelers only. This way your belongings are more secure and you go the fastest way directly to your destination.

Costa Rica it's the safest country in Central America, it's an excellent place to visit. But maybe not in this moment because the yesterday's earthquake.

hire a local travel guide ask the hotel for a list don't hire a travel agent they are too expensive they get paid by the day not the trip

Costa Rica is very safe, just use common sense and keep an eye on your stuff specially when your in the city.
You can travel with a tour guide, a travel agency or go on oyur own, of course the best way is to go with a good tour guide so that you won´t miss any interesting details.
for recomendations you can e mail me at attorneykearney@yahoo.com
there is plenty to do and see in Costa Rica.
