I would choose Santa Marta. I like the beaches better.

Have not been to Brazil, but Santa Marta, Colombia - as stated above- is a good choice. The city of Santa Marta itself is not the most beautiful, but surrounding it is amazing. You have Parque Tayrona, where you can go through some deep jungle and find yourself in absolute beautiful, tranquil beaches.
You also have a 15 minute bus ride to Taganga, a fisher village, where time basically stops as you lay in a hammock and swim in the light waves. And the sunsets...ahhhh..
Santa Marta itself is lively and has much to do including the upper-scale El Rodedero where you can sit at a cafe and eat ceviches. Very good nightlife that you can find until the wee hours in the morning on weekends. Markets line the streets, meat on sticks, fun people....
choose the Colombian coast!

Brazil is cool but in the north you only find dessert and poverty (favelas)
but Santa marta is a good choise, good beaches there and the lost city with the wise and mistery KOGUI indians.
