I went to Costa Rica for a 6-month internship and ended up staying for about 9 months.

Costa Rica is considered a "developing country" but it has some amazingly "first world" qualities. 1) The tap water is ready-to-drink in San Jose and surrounding suburbs. 2) They have an excellent medical system. If you get sick, you're in decent hands. 3) The literacy rate is higher than that of the US so people are educated, but not always bilingual so know your basic Spanish.

I personally got sick there a few times but I brought my own stomach problems with me. If you're normally fine at home, you'll be fine there. The food is clean and they rarely eat raw food so as long as it's hot, you're not gonna get sick. The mall food courts are completely sanitary. Not convinced? Bring some probiotic tablets to take with meals to keep your enzymes in check. I recommend Acidophilus. Google it.

Have fun!

The water is clean and you can drink from the tap in most places. I have been there about 30 times and have been sick once (my New Orleans record is far worse). The food is good but not spicy.

I was just there, staying outside of San jose and going into the city for work. We asked for bottles water at restaurants, but I also drank iced tea with ice in it, used the tap water to brush my teeth (I was at a nice Marriott), and other wise didn't go out of my way to order foods that didn't need tap water to prepare.

I had no problems at all there or now that I'm back. I think you'll be okay for the most part.

Costa Rica is AMAZING! I never got sick there and neither did any of my friends and we went around the same time as you are going (if that matters). The water, its perfectly fine to drink there is no problem. As for tips, pack for warm weather. Also, DONT forget your swimsuit, it is a must have. Other than that have a great trip. Im sure you will enjoy it. Have Fun!

I travel between the US and Costa Rica often and I have not gotten sick from the food or water in either country.

I did have to go through an operation in Costa Rica (prostate problem). The cost was under $2K! Very good care and I was assigned a private room where my wife could accompany me overnight.

Use common sense when eating or drinking in any country. My wife does buy bottled water though I don't know why. Water is very good in MOST of Costa Rica, even in, or should I say, especially in remote areas ('cause "spring clean").

I just took the regular precautions I would take at home, washing fruit, making sure meat is cooked, etc.
I never got sick from food or tap water. One time I did get a little sick from drinking out of a stream.

Well. I didn't get sick because of the food or the water, but I got the Flu, pink eye, and a little cold, but That was because spend the hold night outside.

Nice choice. Costa Rica has so much to offer. There are some things that you should remember when visiting this place. I hope this site would help you out. Thanks!
