Approximately what percentage of Costa Rica's land area is in protected areas?

Depending on what reports you read, the government protects about 15-18% of the land, but unfortunately they do not have the resources to really protect. And when some developer forks out a ton of cash, government will sell. Recently, in Osa, government sold a piece of property right on the water, and outcry was heard when bulldozers started destroying hatching areas for sea turtles

However, what is most important is that eco-minded private parties are taking it upon themselves to protect more with ecolodges/hotels, reserves, reforestation and replanting farms, butterfly farms, etc. Recently a 2000 hector ( a hector is about 2.47 acres) parcel (on the Caribbean side) was up for sale. Private investors bid on the property (rumored one of those was Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt), where the sole intent was preserving the property in the form of a Eco Foundation.

It is hard to say how much land is NOW protected by private parties, but with ecology more demanding nowadays, it is easy to see that percentage will probably bypass the governments land if it has not done it already.

I think it's 23 % . That's what the Wikipedia and Cafearjun.com articles say. Although I haven't moved there ;)

Derek J
I believe that they have 25% of the land protected. Don't use me as a legal reference on that. I read a lot about the country before moving here without first visiting.

Its kind of scary the way the hunger of money is destroying earth. I really hope we still have protected areas and sea turtles 20 years from now.
